New Center for Developmental Disabilities Announced

Baylor University and Scott & White have announced plans to open a center for developmental disabilities this fall. The announcement came on a day where hundreds of people turned out to the 6th annual Waco walk for autism.

According to a center for disease control study released last year, one out of 88 kids is diagnosed with ASD.

The Waco walk is collaboration with the Heart of Texas Autism Network and Baylor University.

More than four-hundred parents and kids strolled around the campus and enjoyed the live music, games and other activities.

Walk for autism coordinator, Anita Karney talked about the importance of raising awareness through the event.

"It's a family event, as well as an opportunity for families to get information, networking and resources all in one place. It's really invaluable some of the information that we can get because autism is a lifelong condition," said Karney.

First Lady of Baylor, Alice Starr says the university wants to be at the forefront of helping families affected by autism.

"There are so many families with children with disabilities that have never even been diagnosed before. So if we could help, Baylor's here with a lot of professionals who can have the expertise to do that," said Starr.
