Griner and Sims Named to Third All-America Team

Griner and Sims Named to Third All-America Team   

Two of five players on Wooden Award All-American squad are Lady Bears.

 WACO, Texas  – Baylor senior post Brittney Griner and junior guard Odyssey Sims are two of just five players named to the John R. Wooden Award All-American team The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Wednesday. Sims and Griner are the first pair of women's players from the same college team to be chosen to the five player Wooden All American squad since Nneka Ogwumike and Jeanette Pohlen of Stanford were selected in 2011.

 The John R. Wooden Award Women's Player of the Year will be announced at the 2013 Wooden Award Gala presented by Wendy's on April 12, 2013, at The Los Angeles Athletic Club. The Gala will honor the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners, All-Americans and the Legends of Coaching Award winner, Kansas head coach Bill Self.

 Griner is a three-time Wooden All-American who won the Award in 2012. She and Sims are joined on the five-member team by Elena Delle Donne of Delaware, Skylar Diggins of Notre Dame and Stanford junior forward Chiney Ogwumike.

 Griner finished her illustrious career at Baylor setting NCAA records for blocked shots (748) and dunks by a female (18) and ranks No. 2 on the NCAA Division I women's scoring charts with 3,283 points and No. 1 on the Big 12 Conference's scoring chart. The Houston, Texas, native averaged a career-season-high 23.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game this season while shooting a nation's best .607 from the floor.

 Sims, the nation's best on-ball defender, averaged 12.9 points and 5.8 assists as well as recording a team-high 88 steals. The Irving, Texas, native recorded a nation's-best 2.7 assist/turnover ratio, hauled down 2.6 rebounds per contest and sank 83.3 percent of her free throws. Throughout her three-year career, Sims has scored 1,479 points which ranks No. 10 on Baylor's career scoring chart, dished out 469 assists, good for No. 2 on Baylor's career chart and shoots 81 percent from the free throw line.

 Griner and Sims have also been named All-Americans by The Associated Press and the U.S. Basketball Writers' Association.

    The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team fired its lowest round of the tournament on the final day as the Cru finished in third place at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational Tuesday in Florida. The Cru women lowered their score in each of the tournament’s three rounds. UMHB posted a final round 312 to finish with a 323-315-312=950.
