Cuban Says He'd Draft Brittney Griner

Posted:

WACO - Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says he would consider drafting Baylor Lady Bears star Brittney Griner to play in the NBA.

It's not likely she would make the team, but Cuban told ESPN Tuesday night if Griner was the best player available on the board in the second round of the draft, he'd take her.

He'd have "no problem whatsoever" inviting her to tryout for the Mavs summer league team.

"She's still have to make the team, but I'd give her the opportunity," he said.

Griner responded on twitter Tuesday night, saying "I would hold my own.  Let's do it."

Then Wednesday afternoon she added, "So when do I show up for tryouts?"

Word is Griner has hired an agent and should be the top pick in the WNBA draft.  But with all due respect, most experts say the NBA is too fast, too big and too strong for her.

They think this is likely a publicity stunt by Cuban, especially after he told a reporter signing Griner "would sell a few tickets, wouldn't it?"

Former NBA player and coach Kurt Rambis said on ESPN Griner has absolutely no chance to play for any NBA team.

University of Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma, who's faced Griner a number of times, called Cuban's idea a "sham" and said it would be ludicrous to think she could play in the NBA.

News Channel 25 reached out to Cuban for a phone interview and he responded saying thanks for asking, but he was traveling and wasn't available.
