Missing woman found in overnight search

FALLS COUNTY, TX (KXXV) -

A local woman is safe after a massive overnight search through woods and fields just south of Mart. A woman had gotten into an accident off County Road 168 late Monday night.

The woman then apparently called her family and told them she was hurt and lost in the woods. Her family contacted police immediately who began the search.

It took five local law enforcement agencies, one fire department, a helicopter and two search and rescue dogs more than six hours to locate her. They searched a six to eight mile radius before finding her 400 yards into a corn field.

"When we found her she was lying in the field, her cell phone was next to her, where she had been communicating with her family. It looks like the cell phone battery went dead. Her temperature had dropped to below 90 degrees."

Constable Jonathan Shoemaker said he was getting worried as the search went on.

"We were really relieved to actually know that we found her. We were really concerned that we were going to leave and be unable to locate her and be left out there," said Shoemaker.

Authorities believe she was attempting to walk to a major road for help but collapsed because of her injures.

Constable Shoemaker made the decision to call for the scent specific dogs from the Gatesville Prison.

Hughes Unit Warden, Edward Smith's search and rescue dog team were the ones that found the woman laying face-up in the middle of a field.

"When we found her she was lying in the field, her cell phone was next to her, where she had been communicating with her family. It looks like the cell phone battery went dead. She was basically, her temperature had dropped to below 90 degrees," said Smith.

After the long ordeal, the woman was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital. So far the woman's name and condition haven't been released.
