Church fire results into $10,000 in damages

Fire officials say an electrical short is the cause of a fire at a Temple church Monday evening. Firefighters were notified of the fire at 5:28 p.m. when a smell of smoke was detected in the area of S. 43 St. and West Avenue T.

Fire crews spent 15 minutes searching the neighborhood for the fire, until they found it at the West Avenue T Church of Christ on the 2000 block of West Avenue T.

Firefighters saw burning debris on the floor through the front door of the entry way. They forced their way into the church and quickly extinguished the fire.

An investigation determined the fire was unintentional and was caused by an electrical short in the attic.  Fire damage was limited to the ceiling and attic area of the entry way. Officials say the dollar loss is estimated at $10,000.

20 Temple Fire & Rescue personnel responded to the scene. The fire was controlled by 6:02 p.m., and all units cleared at 7:04 p.m.
