Austin murder suspect arrested in Killeen

KILLEEN, TX (KXXV) -

A 21-year-old man wanted for murder in Austin has been arrested in Killeen. Derrick Leroy Kuykendall is accused of shooting 23-year-old Bennie Heslip to death on March 31 in downtown Austin.

Police say the shooting happened at 3:16 a.m. in a parking lot located at East 11th and Trinity St. When police arrived on the scene, they found Heslip with a gunshot wound. Austin-Travis County EMS transported him to the University Medical Center at Brackenridge where he was pronounced dead at 3:43 a.m.

Detectives say Heslip was with a group of friends in the parking lot when they became involved in a verbal argument with several other individuals. The argument turned violent, and resulted into a shooting. The suspects fled the scene towards West 10th St.

Police originally believed Kuykendall was hiding in Waco. He was found in Killeen this week and has been charged with murder.
