Record Day Leads Baylor Softball To Two Wins

WACO - No. 16 Baylor (28-7, 2-2) saw two career records fall, as the Lady Bears combined for 21 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Iowa State (14-18, 0-2) Friday at Getterman Stadium. BU defeated the Cyclones 13-0 in five innings in game one and followed with a thrilling 4-3 win in 10 innings in game two.

Kathy Shelton broke Harmony Schwethelm's all-time program record for steals, now sitting at 105, while Whitney Canion picked up a pair of wins to become Baylor's all-time wins leader (83) to surpass Lisa Ferguson.

"What a special day to have these two all-time greats break records together," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We were clicking on all cylinders in game one and I was really proud of the heart we showed to fight out a win in game two. We need to get ourselves regrouped and ready for a battle tomorrow."

Linsey Hays and Jordan Strickland each registered four hits on the day, while Kaitlyn Thumann led the way with five RBI. Hays added four RBI, while Shelton totaled four steals to help the BU offense. Shelton extended her on-base streak to 17 games.

Game One

Baylor 13, Iowa State 0 (5)

Baylor jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first and had the game on cruise control with a 13-0 lead after two innings en route to a 13-0 win in game one.

Thuman went 2-for-3 with a triple, walk, two runs, four RBI and a stolen base. Strickland added a pair of RBI on her first home run of the year, while Shelton had a pair of hits and three runs.

Canion earned the win (14-4), going 3.0 innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five. Courtney Repka came on to throw 2.0 innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit.

Shelton led off the first being hit by a pitch, stealing second and coming in to score off a Thumann single. Hays added an RBI of her own on a single to right and Canion singled through the right side to make it 3-0 with one out. With two outs, Shelton singled to right for an RBI and a 5-0 lead before Thumann tripled to to right to clear the bases for an 8-0 advantage. The eight-run inning tied a season high for runs in an inning, as BU had eight, twice vs. North Dakota on March 1.

The Lady Bears upped the lead to 13 with a five-run second. With one out and Sydney Betke in to pinch run, Strickland powered a two-run shot over left center for her first homer of the year and a 10-0 advantage. Shelton got the offense started again with a single and stole second for her record-breaking steal of 103. Thumann followed with a walk before Holly Holl delivered an RBI single to center. Hays added an RBI, her second of the game, before a wild pitch scored Holl for the 13-0 lead.

Game Two

Baylor 4, Iowa State 3 (10)

Thumann came up in the bottom of the 10th with the bases loaded and delivered a walk-off sac fly to deep center for the 4-3 victory.

Hays and Strickland each had a pair of hits, while Hays had two RBI and Shelton added two stolen bases to pace the offense. Holl tied a program record with four walks in the game, originally set by Bri Chambliss vs. Furman on March 1, 1997.

The Cyclones led off the game with back-to-back infield singles, and a two-out walk loaded the bases, but Heather Stearns got a fly out to center to keep the game scoreless.

The Lady Bears stranded a pair of runners of their own, as Shelton and Holl each walked in the first but were left in scoring position.

Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the third on a Hays single to center, scoring Thumann who doubled with one out.

Stearns walked her fourth batter to lead off the fifth and was replaced by Canion. After giving up a one-out walk, Canion allowed a two-out single from Jorden Spendlove to tie the game at one apiece.

BU would answer back in the bottom of the inning off another RBI from Hays, scoring pinch runner Justine Young to take the lead back. With the bases loaded, Clare Hosack drew a walk for an RBI and a 3-1 advantage, but two outs followed to leave the lead at just two.

The Lady Bears held the 3-1 lead until a two-run blast to left center from Tori Torrescano with no outs in the seventh evened the game at three.

The game remained tied until Baylor loaded the bases in the 10th with a leadoff single from Canion, a walk by Strickland and an error at third that allowed Shelton to reach first. Thumann stepped up and delivered a deep sac fly to the warning track that scored Betke from third for the 4-3 win.

Canion (15-4) earned the win with a relief performance of 6.0 IP, five hits, two runs, two earned, three walks and 11 strikeouts.

Baylor will go for the series sweep on Saturday at Noon at Getterman Stadium.
