Fire destroys Copperas Cove Goodwill, estimated $1 million in damages

Posted:
COPPERAS COVE -

An late night fire has destroyed and caused nearly a $1 million in damages to the Copperas Cove Goodwill store. Firefighters were called out to the Goodwill store along Highway 190 in Copperas Cove late Tuesday night.

Three fire engines, two ambulances, and three command units initially responded to the scene. When fire crews arrived, they noticed heavy fire on three sides of the building and attempted to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Firefighters were able to control the fire after 1 a.m., but had to continue fighting hot spots throughout the morning. Investigators are trying to figure out what sparked the fire, and where it began.

The building was unoccupied during the fire, and the store and storage area in the back were destroyed. A representative for Goodwill says the fire will force 20 employees to now work at the Goodwill store in Killeen.

The Goodwill store damaged by the fire is the only one in Copperas Cove, and it has been around since the early 1980's. Goodwill says they plan on rebuilding the store once the investigation has been completed.

Officials say the estimated damage done to the store is nearly $1 million, but an exact dollar amount won't be determined until after the investigation.
