Two sanitation workers injured in garbage truck flip over

LORENA, TX (KXXV) -

Two sanitation workers have been sent to a local hospital after a garbage truck they were riding in flipped over Tuesday morning.

Two people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The passenger, 45-year-old Carl Williams was pinned under the truck for 45 minutes. Firefighters had to use the jaw of life to lift the 30 ton Mack garbage truck off his legs. Williams was rushed to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he had to undergo surgery for his severe lower leg injuries.

The driver, 45-year-old, Lelon McGahee of Harker Heights, was also injured in the accident. He too was taken to Hillcrest with non-life-threatening injuries.

Williams and the McGahee work for Progressive Waste Solutions out of McGregor. The two were making stop along their daily route when the back axle of the vehicle broke off and caused the truck to flip on its side.

The Lorena Fire Department was notified about the incident at the intersection of Robin Rd. and Ranchcrest Rd. at 10:34 a.m. It took fire crews almost a half hour to reach the scene in the rural part of Lorena near the intersection of Ranchcrest Road and Robin Road. Once crews were on scene it took them just 15 minutes using the Jaws Of Life to lift the truck and get him out.

Officials say the truck is a 2003 Mack Garbage Truck from Progressive Waste Solutions out of McGregor. News Channel 25 contacted the company about the accident but they declined to comment.

The accident is still under investigation but DPS believes a mechanical failure is to blame.
