Baylor Softball Falters Late In 5-1 Loss at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - No. 15/18 Baylor (26-7, 0-2) held a 1-0 lead through four innings, but five unanswered runs in No. 9 Texas' (29-4, 2-0) final two at-bats gave the Longhorns the 5-1 win Sunday afternoon at McCombs Field in Austin.

"We battled with them again and Heather (Stearns) pitched a good ballgame," head coach Glenn Moore said. "I am not happy with the way we ended the game. We have to get better from here."

Kathy Shelton extended her on-base streak to 15 games, as she had one of two Baylor hits on the day along with a Kaitlyn Thumann double.

Freshman Heather Stearns (8-3) took the loss despite a solid outing, striking out eight, allowing one walk, three hits, two runs and one earned in 4.0 innings of work. Whitney Canion came on in relief with two runners on and no outs, throwing a total of 1.0 innings, giving up three hits, three runs, one earned and striking out one. Courtney Repka worked the final inning, allowing a hit and a walk.

Luna (15-1) picked up the win for the second-straight day, throwing a complete game, fanning 11, giving up two hits, one unearned run and walking five.

Stearns struck out the side to open the first, before Baylor put together its biggest threat of the game in the second. Sarah Smith led off the second with a hit by pitch and was pinch run for by Justine Young, who was sacrificed over to second by Clare Hosack. An errant throw on the bunt allowed Young to reach third before a Holly Holl walk loaded the bases with no outs. Robin Landrith and Kelsi Kettler each struck out before Jordan Strickland hit a grounder to third that was bobbled, allowing Young to score for the 1-0 lead. That was all the runs BU could muster, leaving the bases loaded.

The Lady Bears stranded two more in the fourth, as Hosack and Holl each walked to lead off the inning. After two outs, and Hosack at third, Strickland popped out to end the threat.

Stearns showed her resolve, working out of her own jam in the bottom of the inning. Wih two outs, Stearns looked to have worked herself out of trouble with a grounder to second, but it was bobbled to load the bases. The freshman responded by striking out Gabby Smith on a 2-2 pitch to keep Texas off the board, and hold a 1-0 lead.

Texas had the first two runners reach to lead off the fifth, and Canion came on to relieve Stearns, promptly hitting Brejae Washington to load the bases. Taylor Thom's sac fly to right tied the game at one, but Jill Reid's relay in went wild, allowing both runners to reach scoring position. Kim Bruins then knocked an RBI-single to take a 2-1 lead after five.

The Longhorns added three more runs in the sixth, as Torie Schmidt led off the inning with a grounder to the circle that was overthrown to first. An RBI-double from Smith gave UT its third run, as Smith advanced to third on a bobble on the relay from second. A pair of RBI-singles rounded out the scoring for Texas, claiming a 5-1 lead.

Baylor had the tying run on deck in the seventh, but a fly out to center field from Smith ended the rally attempt.

The Lady Bears will be back in action, hosting Iowa State in a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 29 with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
