FORT HOOD -
More than five hundred people came to the Hiring for Heroes Military Spouses job fair on Fort Hood today. The military spouse program is less than one year old, and they are happy to bring local employers to a comfortable environment for spouses to find new careers.
Many military spouses have to leave their jobs once their spouses receive a new assignment. They can acquire a dozen jobs to put on their resume, but the lack of consistency is usually a red flag for employers.
The Director of Military Spouse Employment Program spoke to News Channel 25's Markeya Thomas about the goal of this program.
"What we want to do, as the Chamber of Commerce, is bring together some of these top employers that are doing really cool stuff for military spouses. Not just to hire them, but to help them maintain a career," said Laura Dempsey.
Military spouses volunteer at three times the national average, and often use their spare time to further their education.
"They are often leaders in their civic and charitable engagements, but they don't sell themselves well," explains Dempsey. "And because they move around so much, they don't have a lot of contacts and networks to help them move up."
This program especially wants to help spouses, because most hiring programs are geared towards veterans.
