Griner and Sims Named WBCA All-Region 5
ATLANTA - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced the All-Region nominees for the 2013 WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America Team. The selection committee will review the 52 candidates and trim the list for selection to the 10-member WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America Team.
The Baylor duo of senior Brittney Griner and junior Odyssey Sims, 2012 WBCA Coaches' All-American selections, were named to the seven-member WBCA Coaches' All-Region 5 team. Both are again candidates for the 2013 WBCA Coaches' All-America Basketball Team.
Former Lady Bear Sophia Young became Baylor's first two-time WBCA All-American with selections in 2005 and `06. Suzie Snider Eppers was Baylor's first WBCA All-American in 1977, Sheila Lambert was honored in 2002 and Griner was a 2011 and 2012 selection and Sims earned her first recognition in 2012. Griner was an honorable mention pick as a freshman in 2010 and Sims earned honorable mention kudos as a freshman in 2011.
The 2013 WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America Basketball Team will be announced during the WBCA National Convention on Saturday, April 6 at 1:10 p.m. (CT) during the NCAA's Super Saturday festivities at the New Orleans Arena.
Griner and Sims are joined on the seven-member All-Region 5 team are Angel Goodrich (Kansas), Brittany Chambers (Kansas State), Toni Young ( Oklahoma State), Aaryn Ellenberg (Oklahoma) and Iowa State's Hallie Christofferson. Griner received her fourth all-region selection while Sims was named all-region for the third straight season.
Griner, a 6-8 senior post, was named the Big 12 Player of the Year for the third straight season and was the league's Defensive Player of the Year for the fourth straight year. The Houston, Texas, native has led the top-ranked Lady Bears to a 32-1 record, both the Big 12 Conference regular season and postseason tournament crowns and an undefeated league record at 18-0. In addition, Griner, the reigning consensus national player of the year, was named the Big 12 Championships' most outstanding player for the third straight year and is a finalists for all major player of the year awards.
Griner is averaging 23.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game while shooting a nation's-leading 60.4 percent from the floor and 71.0 percent from the free throw line.
Throughout her four-year career, Griner has registered an NCAA and Big 12 record 736 career blocked shots and ranks No. 2 on the NCAA Division I career scoring list with 3,203 points.
Sims, a 5-8 point guard, averages 12.7 points and 5.7 assists per game but perhaps more importantly, she takes care of the ball. Sims ranks No. 2 nationally in assist/turnover ratio at 2.7. Throughout her three-year career, Sims has scored 1,427 points and dished out 450 assists.
The talented junior is a three-time All-Big 12 selection and was has twice been named to the Big 12 Championships' all-tournament team.
