GATESVILLE -

Another case of rabies have been detected in Gatesville for the third time in March. Animal Control Officers were sent to a home in the 1000 block of Highland Drive on March 13 after the home owner found a skunk in his backyard.

When they arrived, they found and shot the skunk and sent it to the Texas Department of Health Services in Austin for testing. During the weekend that the skunk tested positive for rabies.

The home owner's dog may have come into contact with the skunk, and is currently under confinement until officials can rule out that the pet contracted the virus.

Two other skunks that tested positive for rabies on March 1, when they were found at home in the 100 block of Pate Drive and a home in the 100 block of Ash Drive.

The City of Gatesville require annual rabies vaccinations be given to all dogs and cats residing inside the city limits. Authorities want to encourage residents to keep an eye on their pets and to watch for any signs of the rabies virus.
