A recent article suggests that kettlebell training may just be a “must-do” for the serious powerlifter’s exercise regimen. Kettlebell trainer and world champ Lorna Kleidman offers a response, saying that it's good to see kettlebells being taken up by serious exercisers.

On March 18, kettlebell expert Lorna Kleidman comments on an article posted on Mike Mahler’s Aggressive Strength website. Author Jack Reape discusses the benefits of kettlebell training, saying that the typical powerlifter usually performs the most basic of exercises and doesn’t offer himself enough variety in his routine. Reape asserts that while kettlebells are not the “sole answer” to every lifter's weakness, they're “an absolute must” for the average powerlifter.
Kettlebells offer dynamic training potential in the way their shape and weight affects “center of gravity, gripability, [and] planes of possible movement,” says Reape, adding that any tool that will interact with your muscles in a different way “has a great potential to make an improvement in your training.” Reape recommends mixing up your routine by substituting kettlebell exercises for dumbbells for an effective change of pace.
The article says kettlebells can be extremely effective not just for “dynamic/explosive” work, but also for general physical preparedness (GPP) and the prehabilitation and rehabilitation of injuries. For GPP exercises, Reape recommends doing farmers walks while holding kettlebells. The fatter and smoother the handle is, the harder your hand has to work to hold onto the kettlebell. To improve the glutes and hamstrings, he suggests using either a single or double kettlebell swing. For deadlifts, Reape says, “The front squat with [kettlebells] is great for building the conventional pull start off the floor. I have only done close stance [kettlebell] cleans a few times but some [narrow-stance deadlifters] swear by this movement.”
