Police catch convicted felon with firearm and narcotics

TEMPLE, TX (KXXV) -

A convicted felon is in Bell County jail after he is found with a firearm during a traffic stop.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on Thursday in the 300 block of E Avenue F. During the traffic stop, officers tried to identify a passenger in the vehicle, but he provided false information to the officer.

The officer noticed the suspect began to act suspiciously in the rear seat of the vehicle. The officers attempted to remove the suspect from the vehicle and detain him for safety concerns.

The suspect physically resisted the officers. During the struggle a handgun fell from the suspect's possession, and officers were able to wrestle the suspect away from the weapon.

Officers detained 33-year-old Porfirio Castro Jr., and secured the weapon. They also found an unspecified amount of a controlled substance in Castro's possession.

Police later discovered that Castro had several outstanding warrants for his arrest. Castro faces possession of a firearm by a felon charges.
