Waco man dies after being hit by train in McLennan County

A Waco man is dead after being hit by a freight train on Simpson Road in Crawford.

Around 4:30pm, 28-year-old David Reid McCartney was driving a tow truck on his way to pick up another car.

McCartney was crossing the tracks when he was hit by a Union Pacific train cutting the tow truck in half. His body was ejected from the truck.

Investigators determined he wasn't wearing a seat belt, and that could have prevented him from being thrown from the truck. However, investigators will be looking more into it.

There are no gates, bells, or whistles at the crossing. According to officials, McCartney stopped at the crossing, and then continued to cross.

"We do see this a lot, the trains just can't stop, and when you come to crosses like this, especially in a rural area, you need to look, listen and look again before you pull across the tracks. It's very important," said Trooper DL Wilson, Public Information Officer for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The train did have a camera on the front, and DPS will continue to investigate further.
