Local Catholics expect changes from new pope

WACO, TX (KXXV) -

Waco Catholic Churches are happy for a new pope, but say there could be some changes.

Local Catholic officials say it's a great day and everyone's happy for the announcement.  Rev. John Guzaldo at St. Louis Catholic Church says they are no longer fatherless and have a leader again.

However Jose Mario Bergoglio could bring some changes to the church.  Guzaldo says each pope brings an identity to the station and Bergoglio could represent the poor.

One parishioner says he found it odd Bergoglio chose the name "Francis" because Bergoglio is of the Jesuit order.  He said the name comes from the Franciscan order which is usually known for supporting the poor.

Guzaldo also says he was surprised by the decision.  He says he expected an Italian to be chosen because there were a lot of Cardinals in the conclave from Italy.  However, a pope from the Americas is what he wanted.  He says it's about time there's a pope from the new world because they represent a large portion of the Catholics population.

"But in South America for a long time now it's been exploding ever since Columbus sailed and landed in the Americas it has exploded there. So it's about time they had a representation," Guzaldo said.

Guzaldo also explained they had a contest at the church to see if anyone could guess who the next pope would be.  Jose Mario Bergoglio from Argentina wasn't even on the list.  However, Guzaldo did pick Cardinal Leonardo Sandri who's also from Argentina.
