Texas unemployment rate for January up slightly

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas unemployment rate for January rose slightly to 6.3%.

The Texas Workforce Commission on Friday announced the higher jobless rate compares to a seasonally adjusted 6.2% in December and 7.2% in January 2012. Nationwide unemployment for January was 7.9% and slipped to 7.7% in February.

Chairman Andres Alcantar says the Texas economy continues to add jobs and create opportunity with growth in all 11 major industries over the last year.

Midland had the lowest statewide unemployment in January at 3.4%. The McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area had the state's highest jobless rate at 11.6%.
