Rabid skunks found in Gatesville

Gatesville Animal Control Officers have found two rabid skunks in the Gatesville area.

The first skunk was found at a home in the 100 block of Pate Drive where it was fighting with some dogs in a yard.  The next day, another skunk was found in the yard of a home in the 100 block of Ash Drive.

Both skunks were shot by Animal Control Officers when found, and were sent to the Texas Department of Health Services in Austin for rabies testing.

On Wednesday, Gatesville Police were told that both skunks tested positive for rabies.

The City of Gatesville requires annual rabies vaccinations be given to all animals inside city limits.  Authorities want residents to watch for any signs of the rabies virus.

Some common clinical signs include a change in behavior and unexplained paralysis.  Other signs include not eating, pawing at the mouth, difficulty in swallowing, seizures, eating strange objects, appearance of choking, chewing at the site of the bite, and hyper-sensitivities to touch or sound.

Persons coming in contact with high risk animals such as skunks, bats, foxes, coyotes, and raccoons, who are acting abnormally, should contact Animal Control Officers immediately at 865-2226.
