Bell County scam artist steals thousands of dollars from Texas residents

BELTON -

Jay Curtis Slayton operated under Solid Rock Storage Shed and Top Hand Structures, promising to build storage sheds and cabins across the state of Texas.

He has scammed thousands of dollars out of Texas residents. News Channel 25's Markeya Thomas was able to speak to one of the victims.

"It was $9,485 that I wrote a check for," explains Ryan Rogers. "After that, he told me he was going to have my building by the first of September."

Rogers lives in Carrizo Springs, and was looking for a contractor to help him build some rental properties. He found Slayton on Craigslist, and thought he was getting a good deal.

Rogers gave Slayton half of the cost of the construction for building materials, and when Slayton failed to build the Cabins, he contacted Slayton.

"He eventually comes clean and says I didn't build your building. It was two foot short and he sold it to someone," said Rogers.

Rogers says Slayton agreed to return his money plus interest. Slayton's wife wrote Rogers a check for 11 thousand dollars, but the check bounced.

Donnie Adams of Bell County Sheriff's Office says Slayton would meet with the victim, and ask for building costs.

"He was making contact with folks and he would show up to their place. Offered to do business with them, and needed money up front to buy supplies," explains Adams. "Folks would provide money for first draw, and then he would never show up again."

The Bell County Sheriff's Office has been working with several victims of Slayton and was able to arrest him last month. They are asking for any other victims to come forward and contact them at (254) 933 - 5438
