TEMPLE -
A middle school in Temple was temporarily locked down Monday morning when a police pursuit ended near the school.
Temple police say the incident started around 7:50 a.m. when officers spotted a car being driven erratically on the northbound lane of Interstate 35.
Police attempted to pull the car over for moving violations, but the driver exited onto S.W. HK Dodgen Loop and sped away. A vehicle pursuit began and lasted for about 10 minutes.
The driver stopped his car at Avenue R and South 21st Street, and when officers tried to remove the suspect from the vehicle, he violently resisted. Police deployed a Taser and placed 34-year-old Thomas Kiefer in custody.
Kiefer is in Bell County Jail and has been charged with driving with an invalid license, resisting arrest, and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.
Because the incident occurred close to Travis Middle School, the school was on lockdown for 10 minutes until the suspect was in custody.
