Economist says expanding medicaid will be good for Texas

Governor Rick Perry says no for Medicaid expansion, but a Waco economist says Texas should expand Medicaid.

In a study conducted by Dr. Ray Perryman of The Perryman Group, recommends the state should participate in the Medicaid expansion.

If state lawmakers expand Medicaid in Texas, within the first 10 years, smaller populated areas can see one billion dollars coming into the local economy.

Perryman examined every industrial group to be affected, and says many will have a positive impact.

This includes health care, retail trade, manufacturing, agriculture, business/financial services and hospitality. All of those work areas will see more profit and thousands of jobs would be created. Also, state government would make money because of it.

Perryman also noted people who have insurance tend to work more and have fewer days of absents.

In McLennan County alone, at least 45,000 are uninsured. That's one out of four people.

Texas legislation is expected to vote on Medicaid expansion during the current session.
