SAN MARCOS, Texas - Clare Hosack's go-ahead, three-run home run in the bottom of the third spurred No. 25 (14-2) to an 8-3 win over North Texas (6-8) Saturday morning on day three of the Texas Shootout. The victory, BU's 13th in a row, puts the Lady Bears in Sunday's title game at 12:30 p.m.
Kelsi Kettler tied a career high with three hits, all doubles, getting the start at third base. Hosack added three RBI, while Sarah Smith extender her hit streak to seven and on-base streak to 12.
Whitney Canion (7-1) allowed just one hit, a three-run home run, in 5.0 innings, walking two and striking out seven. Heather Stearns closed out the final two innings, not allowing a hit, run or walk and striking out four.
"This is such a fun team to coach," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Our pitching has been phenomenal and the offense answered the call today. We made it to the title game, but our business is unfinished."
Baylor looked as if it would bust the game open in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with one out. Kaitlyn Thumann led off the game with a single up the middle, followed by a Kathy Shelton single and a one-out single from Smith. With the bases loaded, Linsey Hays drew a walk for an RBI and a 1-0 lead, but the Lady Bears would strand all three runners in the inning and only lead by one.
A pair of walks would come back to haunt Canion in the second, as a two-out blast to center off the bat of Taylor Schoblacher was the only hit allowed by Canion, giving North Texas the 3-1 lead.
The Lady Bears would answer in the bottom of the third, as Holl led off with a single to left center. A one-out single from Hays put two runners on, and with two outs, Hosack crushed a home run over the left field wall for a 4-3 lead. The blast was the first for the junior on the year.
Baylor busted the game open in the fifth, scoring four runs with two outs. Kettler got thing going with her third double of the day, a liner to left center that advanced Hosack to third. Jordan Strickland hit a double to right center, that cleared the bases for a 6-3 advantage. Following a Thumann walk, Shelton stepped up to deliver a base hit up the middle that scored Thumann and forced a bad throw home fro the right fielder that scored Strickland for the 8-3 lead.
Baylor's 11 hits marked the fifth time it has recorded double-digit hits this season.
The Lady Bears will have a rematch with North Texas for the Texas Shootout championship, Sunday at 12:30 p.m. That game can be heard live on baylorbears.com.
