Central Texas expected to have huge population growth by 2050

Everything is big in Texas, including the population, and one expert is predicting the number of Texans will sky rocket in the next 35 years.

Central Texas is one of the areas that will feel the impact. This could be a good thing, but it could also present the Heart of Texas area with some challenges.

Texas is the second largest populated state in the country with 26 million residents. That could change by 2050.

"For Central Texas in general, we are basically seeing population growth in urban areas, and in the particular area that I like to call the Texas Triangle, which is an area from Dallas-Ft. Worth down I-35 from San Antonio to Houston." said Dr. Mike Cline, a demographic researcher at Rice University. "Central Texas is feeling that everyday and could see a population increase."

Cline says Central Texas could see a significant population growth.

"Killeen, Temple, Ft. Hood area can see a population increase from 405,000 to 865,000 by 2050," Cline said. "The Waco area can jump from 235,000 to 326,000 by 2050."

This will help Texas become the most populated state. Of course, growth equals opportunities.

Dr. Paul Stock, an economics associate professor at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor says the states population will positively impact the economy.

"Obviously, economic growth is good for any region, government officials hope for this. Especially since Texas' economy is so diverse," said Stock.

With the future growth of the state, the area will have to face challenges.

"The government officials are going to have to plan for this growth, meaning that they are going to have to forecast future growth for infrastructure, highways, schools, airports, electric grids," Stock said.

The projected population increase is mainly because of natural growth. This means, more people are being born than dieing.

People moving to Texas are only a part of the increase.
