Waco site chosen to participate in wetland study

Posted:
WACO -

Waco has been chosen for a study on wetlands in getting certain chemicals and medicines out of the water supply.

Baylor University researchers, along with the Bureau of Reclamation and the US Geological Survey, will conduct a 5-year study on sewage and wetlands.

The purpose of the 1.5 million dollar project is to determine if wetlands can remove contaminants from prescription pills and personal care products that get flushed.

Endocrine disrupting compounds(EDC)-- are contaminants that are removed in the water utilities treatment process. But if the study finds wetlands also remove EDC, that would mean a more cost effective water treatment.

So far, only Waco has been selected for the wetlands. Grants will cover the cost of the study.
