The McLennan Highlanders defeated the Temple Leopards 69-58 this afternoon in Temple.
The game was close throughout the first half with neither team gaining more than a four-point lead. MCC held the 28-24 lead at halftime.
The Highlanders opened the second half on a 9-2 run and extended the lead to 12 with 15:30 to go in the game. Temple rallied, tying the game at 56 with just over four minutes to play. MCC ended the game on 13-2 run, including going 8-10 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to seal the win.
D.J. Weathers led the Highlanders with 19 points. Tevin Hanner and Shawn Prudhomme added 16 and 10, respectively.
In women's action, the Temple Lady Leopards defeated the McLennan Highlassies 56-49.
The Highlassies opened the game on an 8-0 run and extended the lead to nine, 16-7, with 7:56 to play in the first half. Temple ended the half on a 16-2 run to take the 23-18 advantage at the break.
MCC's Cha'Zaye Wright came out hot, opening the second half on a 7-0 run of her own. The Highlassies took the 31-27 lead with 12:58 remaining in the game. The Lady Leopards responded with a 10-0 run in the next five minutes to break open the game. Temple extended the lead to 14 with just under three minutes to play. The Highlassies fought back, cutting the lead to seven but ran out of time to complete the comeback.
Sondra Flippin led the Highlassies with 12 points and Wright scored 11. Shanice Davis added 10.
MCC returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Ranger. The women's game will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and make a donation to help the Highlassies support breast cancer awareness.
