Tax increase to fund new Hewitt police and fire building

HEWITT, TX (KXXV) -

Hewitt City Council announced Monday plans to build a new police and fire department building, which will result in higher taxes for residents. The city council approved a notice of intent for sale of certificates of obligation to pay for the buildings.

The project is projected to total $3.85 million dollars, but the city says property taxes will likely go up in 2013. The city council says residents can expect to pay on average, an extra $2.27 a month.

City Manager Adam Miles says, "The City Council determined that the timing was right to move forward with this project...By taking advantage of historic low interest rates and a competitive construction market, the time of this project could not be a better value to our citizens."

Construction for the new building is set to begin in mid-winter of 2013.
