Gov. Rick Perry calls for more charter schools

Posted:

Governor Rick Perry expressed his feelings towards the Texas school system by calling for more charter schools throughout the state, and to honor a voucher plan.

Perry, addressing the State Board of Education, told members, "In terms of philosophy, this is where the rubber meets the road."

Waco ISD says it's unfair that charter schools don't have to follow certain rules that are required by a public school.

"If charter schools and private schools are really the standard that the state wants, why not let the public schools operate under the same rules," said Waco ISD Administrator, Bonny Cain.

Charter schools don't have to accept every child who comes in or have testing and accountability rules like public schools.

Vouchers also remain an issue. They're a way for public tax dollars to be used to fun private schools. This allows parents in poor performing districts to use public money to send their children to private schools.

Rapoport Academy, a charter school in Waco and a public school, offers student's another option for education.

"Charter schools are different and that is part of the role they play. They provide a range of different options for family, so they have a different educational approach, different emphasize with in the big picture in the goal of a public education system," said Dr. Matthew Polk, Rapoport Academy Superintendent.

Perry also called for an increase exposure to technical training on everything from engineering to veterinary science.
