Local pastor killed in double fatal accident, community reacts

Posted:
WACO -

A local pastor was one of two people killed in a head-on collision Wednesday afternoon.

Jim Gray, the senior adult pastor at First Baptist Woodway, was driving a 2010 Honda van that collided with a 2004 Dodge Ram pick-up truck about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Old Lorena and Church Roads in far west Waco.

After an investigation, police concluded that Gray crossed over the yellow line causing the two cars to collide. Both vehicles spun out and landed off the road.

Gray was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the truck, 89-year-old Elmer Franks, had to be cut from the vehicle and flown to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Waco Police and Fire responded, along with officers from Woodway and Lorena, and Department of Public Safety troopers.

Gray had been at First Baptist Woodway for 13 years and had recently began filling in at the pulpit on Sundays after long-time Senior Pastor Mike Toby passed away last month from brain cancer.

Highland Baptist Church Associate Pastor Mark Wible said Gray will be greatly missed in the community.

"Any time you lose a man of that caliber who had a heart of concern for people, who had a heart of compassion for people who were hearting, always had an encouraging word, it's a tremendous loss to the community," said Pastor Wibel.

A visitation for Pastor Jim Gray is planned for Sunday February 3rd, from 2:00-4:00p.m. at the Wilirson- Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco. The service will be held Monday at 11:00a.m. at First Baptist Church of Woodway.
