MCLENNAN COUNTY -

A South Carolina fugitive, who was wanted for assaulting a peace officer, has been arrested in McLennan county.

Rudolph Darby was wanted by authorities in South Carolina for attempting to kill a police officer and for an aggravated robbery. He allegedly shot at deputies on two different occasions in South Carolina. Darby was able to escape arrest and apparently fled to Waco.

Darby had been living in Waco for years and using the name Joe Stewart. "Stewart" had a run in with law enforcement in 2010. He allegedly lead the sheriff's office on a chase that eventually ended when he hit a park car. He then took off on foot and evaded arrest.

McLennan County deputies Joseph Ballew, Michael Graham and Detective Joseph Scaramucci were able to identify Stewart as Darby and made the arrest.

Darby will be extradited back to South Carolina to face the more serious charges.
