Gatesville ISD Considering New Firearm Policy

Gatesville ISD received positive feedback regarding district employees being able to carry firearms.

A survey was sent to district employees after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting last month. Most respondents are in favor of district employees being able to carry handguns, and also want there to be a required psychological test for those who want to carry.

News Channel 25's Markeya Thomas spoke to Superintendent Stewart Speer, and he told her that he thinks it is sad that extreme measures have to be taken.

"It's unfortunate, I think teachers should be able to be in a classroom, and be able to focus on teaching," said Speer.

Chris Reedy, a concerned parent, is also in favor of Gatesville allowing for faculty to be able to carry firearms.

"Ultimately, the only way to stop a bad man with a gun is a good man with a gun," explained Reed.

Gatesville ISD plans to present a firearm policy at the next board meeting, and are hopefully to have a new policy in place to protect their students.
