Road rage leads to man assaulting officer

A man assaults an off-duty investigator after a fellow driver calls authorities and accuses the suspect of road rage. The initial incident occurred Wednesday afternoon on FM 116 between Gatesville and Copperas Cove. 

A motorist called the Coryell County Sheriff's Department to report a weapon involved road rage incident. The caller said a motorcyclist had made gesture toward a gun on his belt.

An off-duty investigator heard the radio traffic and informed other authorities that the suspected motorcyclist had just passed him on the road. The investigator says the suspect stopped to go through a fence gate on County Road 140 near the Pidcoke community.

The investigator walked up, identified himself as a law enforcement officer and asked Troy Edward Vandver to stop. Vandver and the officer ensued into a physical altercation, and as other units arrived on the scene, the suspect was seen to try to reaching for his weapon. 

Vandver was subdued and taken into custody. The handgun was recovered and Vandver was transported to the Coryell County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault against a public servant.

Authorities later determined that Vandver was a previously convicted felon and faces additional charges of felon in possession of a firearm.
