Parents of special needs student sue Mart ISD

Posted:
MART -

Parents of a former Mart Middle School student have filed a civil suit against the Mart Independent School District.

Troy and Jamie Nevills are suing the school district because they say their son who has Tourette syndrome was physically bullied and verbally harassed for years and the district did nothing to intervene.

Parents say the boy was teased because Tourette causes him to have involuntary physical and vocal tics that causes him to lose control of his facial muscles and hands.

The suit alleges that the Nevills regularly complained school officials but were never addressed and that the bullying had gotten so bad that they had to take their son out of the district all together.

The family is seeking compensatory services and punitive damages. The amount was not specified in the lawsuit.

Attempts to contact Mart ISD Superintendent Todd Gooden for a statement were unsuccessful.
