Temple mayor to leave office

Temple Mayor Bill Jones III announced Thursday that he will be leaving office in May 2013 to spend more time with his business interest. His current term of office ends in May of 2014, and he said in a statement Thursday that he has submitted official notice to the Temple City Council and the City Secretary about his intentions.

Jones said in a written statement, "I have had a great team of people to assist me in my businesses and in my position as Mayor. This has allowed me to serve as the Mayor of Temple in a way that I believe the position requires. My business interests now require more of my time, which I feel will take away from my ability to serve the citizens of the community and the region in which we live as the Mayor of Temple."

There will be an election in May to determine his successor, and Jones believes his announcement will give the community "adequate time to decide who may wish to run for this great office."

The special election will be held in conjunction with the regular election on Saturday, May 11.
