Humane Society needs hundreds of blankets for animals

When below freezing temperatures hit Central Texas, warming centers for the homeless aren't the only concern.

Waco's animal shelter is struggling to keep some of their homeless animals warm as well.

The Humane Society's Interim Director Don Bland says their shelter is in need of at least 300 blankets for their animals, especially their dogs.

The dogs in Kennel C have houses to rest in at night when cold weather really kicks in, but wind conditions mixed in with a cold concrete floors can cause the animals to be very uncomfortable.

Bland says the animals go through at least 150 to 200 blankets a day.  Sometimes the dogs will use the blankets as chew toys too, causing volunteers to throw a lot of laundry away.

"We pick them up, wash them clean them and start the process over again," Bland explained.  "But on a cold day like this you just don't want them to be without so you need twice as many because while they are being laundered you want them to still have blankets."

Bland also says it's very important these animals stay warm in their kennels so they can be in the best condition possible to up their chances of adoption.

If you have any extra fleece, wool, or any blankets that can be washed bring them into the Humane Society.
