COPPERAS COVE -

A 13-year-old boy is arrested when police found an unloaded handgun in his locker Tuesday morning. The eighth grader at S.C. Lee Junior High student was arrested after administrators heard student reports that a student had brought a Glock .40 caliber handgun to school.

S.C. Lee Principal, Kayleen Love said the handgun and a magazine containing 11 rounds were found in the student's backpack inside his locker. The gun was immediately confiscated, the student was taken away, and police called to the campus. No one was harmed from the incident.

Copperas Cove Police Department detained the student at 10:58 a.m., and processed him as a juvenile for the "places weapons prohibited" felony. He was then transported to the Bell County Juvenile Detention facility.

CCISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Joe Burns was pleased with the swift and efficient steps that were taken by the S.C. Lee staff to make sure the incident didn't disrupt the learning environment.

"The decisive action taken by the S.C. Lee administrative staff to locate and secure the weapon served to minimize disruption to the learning process and maintain the safety of students and staff," Burns said.

S.C. Lee Junior High administrators addressed students during their enrichment period regarding the incident. A letter was sent home to all parents at the end of the school day, as well.

"It is unfortunate that incidents such as this take place in school settings and serves as a reminder to parents to keep firearms secured at all times," Burns said.

The student arrested faces the possibility of a year expulsion.
