BELL COUNTY -
A Florida woman was arrested and booked into Bell County Jail over the weekend for embezzling money when she worked for a local water company. Janice Cramer Durrett is accused of stealing $45,387 from the 439 Water Supply Corp. in Belton.
Belton Police were notified by Michael Beevers that Durrett had been stealing funds from his business. Beevers police Durrett was the office manager and handled new and pre-existing membership accounts.
Beevers had discovered that the business had received checks for new accounts, but Durrett failed to assign the deposited checks to the new accounts. This caused the meters to be installed, but no new accounts to be created in their system.
Police interviewed the suspect and she initially denied stealing any money, but later admitted to stealing approximately $10,000. She said she would take money from the night drop box and using the deposit checks to cover the discrepancies.
A forensic audit stated that Durrett was in sole control of the funds in question and the total amount stolen was $45,387.
