Victim of attempted robbery shot reaching for gun

The victim of an attempted robbery in Waco on Sunday night is now recovering from a gunshot wound.

A 22-year-old man was leaving a smoke shop on 20th St. and Park Lake around 6:30 p.m. As he got into his car, the suspect pointed his gun at him on the passenger side of the victim's BMW, Waco Police said.

The victim reached for the gun and the suspect shot him in the hand, according to police.

The suspect then drove away, and victim ran to his house in the 3600 block of N. 22nd St.

An ambulance took the victim to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. Police expect he will be okay.

Preliminary investigation indicated the robbery was random and the victim and suspect did not know one another.
