Fort Hood soldier killed crossing the street

Killeen Police are investigating a wreck that left a Fort Hood soldier dead on Friday night.

A witness flagged down Killeen Police, who responded to the accident in the 4000 block of S. Fort Hood St. at 11:14 p.m. There they found a 38-year-old soldier, Sgt. Juan Mendoza Vargas, who had tried to cross the street and was hit.

Witnesses told police a 2000 Mustang traveling south in the inside lane of S. Fort Hood St. hit Vargas when he stepped out into the path of the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Vargas was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Phantom Command, III Corps, Fort Hood since September 2012.
