Baylor MBB's Jefferson & Austin Sweep Big 12 Honors

Fourth time in program history Bears win both weekly honors

IRVING, Texas – Baylor men's basketball junior Cory Jefferson and freshman Isaiah Austin were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday. A panel of media members selected the honorees for their performances in games played during the season's opening weekend.

Jefferson and Austin combined to sweep the Big 12 weekly awards for the fourth time in program history. Perry Jones III and Pierre Jackson did so on Jan. 16, 2012, and LaceDarius Dunn and Ekpe Udoh were honored on Jan. 4, 2010, and again on Feb. 15, 2010.

A Killeen, Texas, native, Jefferson entered the season with one career start in three years at Baylor, but his role has increased significantly with the Bears sending three forwards to the NBA after the 2011-12 season.

Jefferson averaged 22.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks to lead Baylor to wins over Lehigh and Jackson State over the weekend. He had career highs with 26 points and 13 rebounds in Friday's 99-77 win over Patriot League-favorite Lehigh, and Jefferson followed that performance with 14 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six blocks in Sunday's 78-47 win over Jackson State.

Jefferson led the team in minutes played in both games and shot 78.3 percent from the field, converting on 18-of-23 field goal attempts. His nine dunks in Friday's season opener were one shy of Quincy Acy's program record.

Austin, an Arlington, Texas, native, needed on 17 minutes to score 22 points in Friday's win over Lehigh. He left the game with an ankle sprain early in the second half and was held out of Sunday's game against Jackson State.

Austin connected on 10-of-12 shots, and his only missed field goals came from three-point range, where he was 2-of-4. He added four rebounds, two blocks and one assist against Lehigh.

Austin's honor gives Baylor 11 Big 12 Rookie of the Week honorees since the start of the 2009-10 season – the Bears had 13 Rookie of the Week winners in the league's first 13 years. Jefferson is Baylor's 11th Big 12 Player of the Week selection since the start of the 2007-08 season, and the Bears had only seven such honorees in the previous 11 seasons.

No. 19/18 Baylor returns to action when it travels to the ESPN Charleston Classic, which runs Thursday through Sunday at Carolina First Arena in Charleston, S.C. The Bears open tournament play against Boston College at 2 p.m. CT Thursday on ESPNU. Following the BC game, the Bears will take on either Colorado or Dayton at 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Friday on ESPNU, and on Sunday they will face one of four teams from the opposite side of the bracket at a time to be determined. Sunday's game will be televised on ESPN2, ESPN3 or ESPNU.
