KILLEEN -

A Fort Hood soldier and a woman are dead after their car was hit by a train early Friday morning in Killeen. The incident occurred after 2 a.m. at the intersection of Gilmer Ave. and the train tracks.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced 26-year-old driver, Spec. Kerey Wayne Berczik, dead at 2:48 a.m. and Coral Ghamdi dead at 2:47 a.m. Berczik was assigned to the first battalion, third squadron, third calvary regiment at Fort Hood.

A silver 2010 Dodge Charger occupied by a male driver and female passenger was driving northbound on Gilmer Ave. A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was traveling west approaching Gilmer Ave.

When the vehicle approached the train tracks the railroad crossing barricades were down, and the driver maneuvered the vehicle around the barricade. The train then collided with the passenger side of the vehicle.

Killeen police found the vehicle flipped on its side with both people in the vehicle. Killeen Fire Department paramedics and firefighters worked to free the male and female from the vehicle by using the Jaws of Life.

Several roadways were shut down including the intersection of 195 and the tracks.
