Factory in Cameron lays off 200 workers

Posted:

One hundred or so employees may be out of work on Friday, their company forced to shut its doors because of money problems.

Royalty Seating is one of the largest employers in Milam County. The company manufactures furniture for schools, and is apparently scrambling, hoping for a last minute bailout.

This company had more than 300 employees at one time and now only a little over a hundred employees.

For two to three weeks the factory will be closed but the company is up for sale, which could put them back to work. Employees say the factory has seen its ups and downs for quite a while.

Royal seating faced a lawsuit from Gemcap, a California lending company. Back in June royal seating ended up filing for chapter eleven bankruptcy, owing dozens of creditors 7 million dollars, according to court papers.

Two weeks later the business canceled their bankruptcy action. That's when employees began notice the company down sized their supplies and other workers.

Virginia Lewis, who had been working at royal seating for over twenty years, told our cameras how heartbreaking it was when she found out she was laid off.

"I felt like I had lost a part of my family. I came here everyday for 22 years and it's like somebody just stripped away something from you that was a part of your life," Lewis said.

Lewis also told me current and former employees are concerned because their pensions and paid time off funds are gone. News Channel 25 was not able to confirm that.

Because the company is up for sale there is an employee re-hire list. Many employees were afraid talking on camera would jeopardize their chances of returning to work again.

Pan Pacific is looking at buying Royal Seating. If they do, dozens of employees who could get laid off tomorrow, may get some good news in a couple of weeks.
