WACO -
Waco Police have arrested the man witnesses say shot and critically injured a baby little more than one week ago.
Police had already arrested Samuel Henry, Jr., 24, on a traffic stop early Thursday morning in the 2100 block of Maple for unrelated charges of driving with an invalid license and possession of crack cocaine.
Detectives then obtained warrants for his arrest after finding evidence of his involvement in the Oct. 10 shooting in the 1600 block of North 18th Street.
"Based on some witness information in the investigation of the detectives, we were able to determine that Samuel Henry Junior was the shooter involved in this case," said Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton.
Seven-month-old Dmar E. Caufield was hit in the head by one of the bullets sprayed at a home in the 1600 block of 18th Street. He was in critical condition and required surgery, eventually "holding his own" on a ventilator, according to police. His uncle, Craig Mays was hit by shrapnel in the arm and suffered minor injuries.
Following the shooting, Sgt. Swanton said detectives with the Crimes Against Children worked "near round the clock" trying to figure out who was responsible.
"Anytime you get an innocent victim, a child like this that's involved, it really brings the harsh realties of the violence that's out there," said Swanton. "We're satisfied with the investigation and happy to have this individual in jail where he belongs."
Henry is charged with injury to a child and aggravated assault. His bond on those charges had not been set as of Thursday evening.
