Deadly 18-wheeler wreck

One driver is dead after a fiery wreck involving two 18-wheelers on Interstate 35.

The crash happened around 10:30 Wednesday night on the northbound lanes of I-35 around the 347 mile marker in McLennan County.

DPS says Martin Edgar, 48, was driving an 18-wheeler northbound in the inside lane at 10 miles per hour with his emergency flashers on. Another 18-wheeler then slammed into the back of his truck.

Witnesses say the driver of the other 18-wheeler, Prek Gjokaj, was traveling at highway speed and never braked. After impact, the trailer and cabin of Gjokaj's truck caught fire. Gjokaj died from crash and Edgar was airlifted to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and was in stable condition.

The trailer of Edgar's truck also caught fire at one point and the residue of aluminum from one truck melted onto the road. Crews began milling the roadway 2 inches down to remove the melted aluminum. They will then overlay the area with new asphalt.
