WACO - A local man is a arrested after he attempted to resist arrest by pulling a knife on a Waco police officer on Friday night.
43-year-old Gerald Wayne Guthrie was stopped in his vehicle near the intersection of New Rd. and Waco Dr. The officer who stopped him pulled Guthrie over for having no taillights on his vehicle.
When the officer approached Guthrie's vehicle, Guthrie jumped out of the vehicle, tried to hide a bag of methamphetamine and fled. Guthrie ran into traffic on New Rd. when the officer eventually apprehended him.
As Guthrie was being escorted to the patrol car, he pulled a knife from his pocket and threatened the officer. The officer deployed a taser, and brought Guthrie to the ground. Guthrie struggled with officer and attempted to run away again.
A security officer assisted the police officer in getting Guthrie arrested and several citizens notified authorities that an officer needed assistance.
Guthrie was transported to the McLennan County Jail is being charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Traffic Fines.
Authorities were also able to connect Guthrie to an August 19th burglary at a home in south Waco where jewelry had been taken when they searched his vehicle. He may face additional charges by the Woodway Police Department.
