Temple Man Arrested For Two Related Morning Robberies

By John Elizondo

TEMPLE - A Temple man is arrested for two robberies that occurred Thursday morning. Anthony Lucas Diaz, 34, stole two purses between 7:50 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. Each incident happened a block away from each other.

The first robbery occurred at N. 2nd Street when an 85-year-old woman exited her vehicle and was approached by Diaz. The victim said that Diaz grabbed her purse and attempted to pull it from her hands. As the victim resisted Diaz, she was pulled in the street by him.

Diaz gained control of the purse, pushed the victim to the ground, and fled in his vehicle which was parked nearby. The victim was able to read and remember the suspect's license plate and provided it to authorities.

35 minutes later Diaz stole another purse at N 3rd Street. Authorities said the victim's purse was stolen when she arrived at work and placed her purse onto her desk. As she put her purse down, immediately Diaz entered the office, grabbed her purse from the desk and ran out of the front door to a vehicle.

A witness observed the suspect exit the office with the purse, and obtained a license plate number for the vehicle.  The license plates in both incidents matched.

Diaz and the vehicle were located at an apartment complex in Temple a short time after the offenses.  Officers were able to take Diaz into custody without incident.  The case will be reviewed with the Bell County District Attorney's Office Friday.

At this time Diaz remains in Bell County Jail on other charges. Neither victim sustained any serious injuries.
