KILLEEN - One soldier is dead and another is in critical condition after a shooting in Killeen.
Officers received a call about shots being fired, and responded to a home at the intersection of Purser Drive and Holbert Drive just before 11 p.m., Thursday.
When they arrived, they found one male lying lifeless in the front yard. He's been identified as 22-year-old Jamie Lee Schnider, a Fort Hood soldier. Judge Garland Potvin pronounced the victim deceased at 11:37 p.m. and ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.
Another 21-year-old soldier was severely wounded. He was suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper torso, and was rushed to the Carl Darnall Army Medical Center by ambulance. He was later flown to Scott & White Hospital in Temple where his condition improved from critical to stable.
Officers detained one man for questioning. He lived at the home where the shooting happened.
Police say the two victims lived across the street from where the shooting happened. They came over to confront the man police have detained. Officers said a verbal altercation turned physical when one of the soldiers assaulted the resident. The assault led to shots being fired.
The resident was taken into custody by officers and has been transported to Killeen City Jail.
Detectives are continuing to investigate this shooting. The case will be reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney's Office later today.
