Temple Man Sentenced For Aggravated Assault On Peace Officer
By John Elizondo
TEMPLE - After being found guilty of aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon in April, Jeffrey Kindred was sentenced to forty years in prison.
The Temple man was convicted for stealing an officer's gun and fired off shots after running from police in April.
Police received a call about a robbery suspect that was spotted at a Cefco Convenience Store on Southeast H.K. Dodgen Loop. The caller noted that Kindred had just left the store in a silver Nissan sedan. It was later determined that he had been suspected of cigarette thefts from the store on previous dates.
Officers pulled over Kindred in his car near 24th St. and Martin Luther King Dr. Temple Police Sgt. Brad Hunt said that Kindred lied to them about his name. When they asked him for his name again, he jumped out of his car and took off over a guard rail on a bridge and ran into a wooded area.
Two officers chased Kindred on foot and eventually the pursuit became physical as they tried to detain him. Temple Police stated that during the struggle, Kindred managed to grab a gun from one of the officers and aim towards the officers head. The officer was able to push the gun away as Kindred pulled the trigger, and the shot went into the ground, missing the officer. Kindred then reportedly fired a second shot as the two vied for control of the weapon. He missed the officer again.
The second officer managed to catch up and intervene. The gun was removed from Kindred's hand, and with the assistance of other arriving officers, Kindred was subdued and handcuffed.
Kindred was found to have an extensive criminal history and an active felony arrest warrant for Escape. He was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer with a Deadly Weapon in April.
