Major Accident On Interstate 35

WEST - A nine vehicle collision caused traffic to back up on Interstate 35 north of West at around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Texas Department of Public Safety said that an 18-wheeler traveling northbound failed to break in time and smashed into at least three other 18-wheelers.  A total of nine vehicles were involved in the accident, four 18-wheelers and five cars.

One of the 18-wheelers was totaled to the point that the entire cab was exposed. Rescue crews on the scene had to use the Jaws of Life to get the driver out. The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center with injuries to his legs. His condition is currently unknown.

Other drivers suffered minor bumps and bruises. Texas Department of Public Safety, West Fire Departments and Abbott Fire Departments responded to the accident. DPS says Interstate 35 northbound will be closed till at least 3:00 p.m.
