WACO - After a few weeks of listening to the complainants of local animal lovers, the city of Waco has decided to continue their existing operations agreement with the Humane Society of Central Texas for the next two months.
The city believes this extension will allow them more time to plan how they will run the kennel facility. The additional time will also allow the society to find more animals homes in the time being.
The existing contract will remain in effect for an additional two months instead of the city taking over Oct. 1.
Local animal lovers, who were protesting the city taking over the facility, say this is a small win for now. There was concern from some McLennan Co. residents that the city planned to euthanize animals after 72 hours of shelter. There was also discussion that the city was not going to open the shelter for adoptions.
"That was going to be a very big black eye on the city of Waco and I am absolutely thrilled that they are going to allow the Humane Society of Central Texas to keep at least the next few months and hopefully forever," said Christi Clark, Humane Society Volunteer.
The city believes this move will allow them to find balance between running the facility and managing the animal population at the shelter.
